I’m pretty damn faithful to Giorgio Armani. I think his clothes are really classy, very simple and understated. His stuff stands the test of time. One of the Oscar highlights for me was flying to Milan to be fitted for my tux by Armani himself. I’ve been a fan of his clothes for years, so I couldn’t believe it when I got a call saying he wanted to do it personally. As a teenager I was crazy about David Bowie.He was a huge inspiration for me. I dressed a little bit crazily in school and dyed my hair every colour under the sun. At one stage my hair was five different colours. My headmaster just gave me a puzzled look and asked, ‘Is that for a play?’
I love to wear a trilby. I also like those wide-brimmed hats men wore in the Forties. When I was younger I wore hats like that, but I couldn’t wear them out and about now I’d just look like an actor trying to be recognised!
I guess I’m not that metrosexual. My bathroom cabinet is hardly overflowing with products. I only really have my stuff for shaving. I can’t honestly say I moisturise, though I probably should.
When I’m getting ready for a film, I hit the gym hard. You’ve got to be fit for almost any film, so the time before shooting is vital. Once you begin, it’s hard to find the time.
I’ve got weights at home but I usually go to the same gym in north London where I’ve been training for years. I usually train with someone, or I listen to my iPod. I have a pretty broad taste in music, so it could be the Specials, the new Bob Dylan album or Hard-Fi.
I love sport, especially football. I’m a huge Liverpool fan, I play a bit of tennis and I’m also quite into horse racing; I go to the races whenever I can. Over the past two years I’ve been working so hard that my priority with downtime is always the family and the kids.
Jewellery isn’t really my thing, but I’ve always got my eye on people’s watches. If they’ve got an interesting one, I want to know where they got it. I have watches by TAG Heuer and Jaeger-LeCoultre.
The clothes in my new film, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, are stunning. Most people have an idea of what the clothing of the period was like, but we seldom think about how funky, vibrant and sexy aspects of it might be.
The first couple of times I went horse riding were bad experiences. Horses can smell if you’re not confident, a bit like women, and I’ve been thrown off. The guy I worked with on King Arthur was great. He built me up slowly and by the end I could do some awesome stuff.
I don’t think I’ve ever had a real fashion disaster. I think actors are lucky in that way. If an actor turns up somewhere black-tie and he’s dressed casually, he’s hardly likely to get turned away or too badly frowned upon.
I don’t care about getting older. As I get older, things have opened up for me, and I’m having the best time of my life at the moment. I’m not at all afraid of getting old and wrinkly.
